6 Days Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb

The Most Challenging & Direct Route to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
The Umbwe Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and is known for its rapid altitude gain and dramatic ridge views. It merges with the Machame Route at Barranco Camp but is significantly steeper in the first two days.
Difficulty Level: Challenging
Success Rate: Moderate (best suited for experienced trekkers)

Itinerary

Umbwe Gate (1,800m) to Umbwe Camp (2,850m)

Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Dense Rainforest
After registration at Umbwe Gate, the climb begins immediately and steeply through thick rainforest. The trail is narrow and less trafficked, giving a true wilderness feeling.
The ascent is continuous with minimal flat sections. Expect humidity and muddy terrain depending on season.
You arrive at Umbwe Camp surrounded by forest canopy.
Highlight: Remote, quiet trail with authentic jungle atmosphere.
Note: Pace is controlled to manage rapid altitude gain.

Umbwe Camp (2,850m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Alpine Desert
The forest thins as you ascend steep ridges into open moorland. The route follows a dramatic narrow ridge with spectacular views into valleys below.
You connect with the Machame Route near Barranco Camp, located beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp is considered one of the most scenic camps on the mountain.
Highlight: Panoramic ridge views and giant groundsels.
Acclimatization: Important rest and hydration evening.

Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall scramble. Though steep, it is non-technical and one of the most exciting sections of the climb.
After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp.
This shorter hiking day allows your body to adjust before summit approach.
Highlight: Climbing the iconic Barranco Wall with stunning glacier views.

Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp

Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steady and exposed climb leads to Barafu Camp, your summit base camp.
The landscape becomes stark and rocky, resembling a lunar environment. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare gear for summit night.
Dinner is served early before resting. Summit attempt begins around midnight.
Important: Prepare headlamp, warm layers, and hydration system.

Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp

Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Distance: 17 km total
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland
Summit night begins around midnight. The ascent is steep and physically demanding, climbing scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,756m).
At sunrise, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After celebration and photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
This is the longest and most demanding day of the climb.
Highlight: Watching sunrise over Africa from the Roof of the Continent.

Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
A gentle descent through lush rainforest leads to Mweka Gate. Summit certificates are issued here.
Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for celebration and recovery.
